MUCH PRESTIGE

From the collection of Rhyl Library comes this picture of a winning float in Rhyl May Day 1909. The event brought out the competitive edge among the town’s traders; according to an early reporter there was ‘much prestige and publicity’ involved in being a winner.

The picture appears to have been taken on or near the seafront in the vicinity of Butterton Road. The float belongs to the firm Rhydwen Jones & Davies whose shop was in Queen Street. “It was a furniture shop,” says Bill Ellis, "and they had a piano department upstairs. How the hell they got the pianos up the stairs I’ll never know!”

Thank you, Bill.
